Business query assistants: separate interpretation from calculation
A study of query tools, charts, exports and access boundaries in our inspection and LIMS work, including why a numeric answer is not sufficient.
An implementation study based on existing project materials. No new tests were run; production, demonstration and proposal stages follow the linked project records.
Starting from two implementations
The inspection project routes natural-language questions through defined tools and uses structured results for charts and exports. The LIMS project also includes business queries, charts and file exports. The question we examine is whether interpreting a request correctly also means selecting the right data scope and calculation basis.
Let the model interpret and the program calculate
The model selects tools, prepares parameters and explains results. Business code calculates totals, ratios and groups. Charts and exports should share structured results to reduce opportunities for numbers to be regenerated during presentation.
Tool parameters still need checking. Incorrect dates, record states, denominators or units can produce a mathematically correct answer to the wrong question.
Examine permissions separately
The inspection materials describe a query chain that retains user identity and customer scope. LIMS restricts entry to internal users, but business tools retrieve data with elevated privileges; its document knowledge base uses the current user’s file permissions. These implementations do not support a blanket claim that every query inherits individual business-record access.
Each tool’s data scope needs review before access expands to more roles. A login screen alone does not establish that scope.
What to validate next
Prepare questions with expected results, covering date boundaries, empty results, different roles, unit changes and export consistency. Record tool choices, parameters, raw results and final answers, then compare them with a human baseline. These are proposed checks; this study includes no new query execution or accuracy measurements.
Basis and scope
This article draws on the materials and source inspections documented in the linked projects. The inspection assistant has demonstrations with database checks; LIMS has source and project documentation. Their evidence does not establish a common production acceptance result.
